Why we built an "AI Derrick"

Introducing Derrick Kinney Elite Advisor Coaching, powered by Contio: Derrick's coaching method, built into every client visit you run.

Derrick Kinney does a bit when he’s coaching. He plays the advisor across the table. Numbers fine. Team growing. Calendar full. And then, in the advisor’s voice: “I know I’m better than what my current revenue numbers say.”

The room always goes quiet, because it’s true. That advisor isn’t short on knowledge. He’s been to the conferences. He’s bought the courses. He can recite the framework for a first prospect visit in his sleep. The problem is Tuesday at 3 PM, third visit of the day, when the old habits sneak back in and he’s winging it again.

That gap, between what an advisor knows and what actually happens in the visit, is the whole reason Contio exists. We turn what gets said into what gets done. So when I met Derrick Kinney, the conversation got interesting fast.

The coach who kept getting the same request

If you’re an advisor, you probably know Derrick, and you’d probably recognize one of his unique shirts from across the room! He built, scaled, and exited a Top 1% advisory firm. He wrote Good Money Revolution, a WSJ and USA Today bestseller. Through Success for Advisors, he coaches advisors on the simplest, most repeatable version of the client conversation, and he’s ruthless about it. His rule is “simplicity leads to profitability.” His other rule is “the least amount of words wins.”

And for about 18 months, his own community had been telling him the same thing. In his words: “Several people have said, Derrick, you need to have some sort of an AI Derrick.”

His wife, Kara, asked the harder question: “Are you sure people want you sitting right next to them all around the country, coaching?”

Turns out they do. Not Derrick the person, who can only be in one room at a time. Derrick’s method, which can be in every room.

“Simplicity leads to profitability.”

Why it was a quick yes

I reached out to Derrick because I liked what he was doing and I thought our values aligned well. He told me later it was “a quick yes,” and that he’s “a sucker for good culture.” I’ll take it.

Here’s the part that made it easy on our side. Contio already sits inside the visit. Advisors use it to prepare for upcoming visits, to capture what’s said without a bot joining the call, and to turn the conversation into the follow-up before they’ve left the parking lot. We had the infrastructure. Derrick had the method. Nobody had put the two together.

So we did. Today we’re launching Derrick Kinney Elite Advisor Coaching, powered by Contio.

Reps with game film

Most advisors get their coaching in bursts. A keynote. A cohort. A one-on-one, if they’re lucky. Then they go run a hundred visits alone and the method fades.

What if every visit was like a weightlifting rep, and every rep came with game film, with the coach looking over your shoulder?

That’s what Derrick Kinney Elite Advisor Coaching does. It’s one Contio plan with Derrick’s fingerprints on every visit. Not a separate app. Not a course you watch once.

Before the visit, the Derrick Brief shows what’s on deck and how much of your time is actually going to your three highest dollar-productive activities. Derrick calls it handing the doctor your X-ray instead of describing your symptoms.

During the visit, his templates run as a guide in his exact words. The Million Dollar Question. “You Know How.” The referral ask placed mid-visit, not at the end when everyone’s tired. Contio captures quietly in the background. No bot. Nothing recorded.

After the visit, you get coaching notes in Derrick’s method: what went well, the openings you missed, the prospect’s own language, and the next step. The follow-up email is drafted in his voice. You review it and send.

Over time, the Advisor Scorecard tracks the three activities that grow the business, plus fee progression, conversion, and referral quality. And for your top clients, a Scheduled Spontaneity reminder lands three or four weeks later with a short voicemail script. Thirty-five seconds of your time, Derrick says, for thirty days of mental ownership.

Scheduled Spontaneity: “That took probably 35 seconds, but it bought me 30 days of mental ownership.”

How it works

Derrick Kinney Elite Advisor Coaching is the full MeetingOS Elite plan with Derrick’s coaching toolkit built in. It lives inside your regular Contio workspace, in a dedicated Derrick Kinney section, and it installs automatically the moment your plan is active. Here’s what’s in it:

Visit templates, word for word. Four to start: the Initial Prospect Visit, built around the Million Dollar Question. The Second Visit, where you “paint the canvas together.” Referral Conversations, placed inside ongoing client visits instead of saved for the end. And Quarterly and Annual Service Meetings. Each one is Derrick’s question methodology as he teaches it, not a paraphrase. They sit alongside Contio’s standard templates, and you pick one when you set up a visit.

The Derrick Brief. A pre-visit snapshot that replaces your memory. It leads with how much of your recent visit time has actually gone to your three highest dollar-productive activities, drawn from your real visit record in Contio, not from what you think you did. Then it shows what’s on deck for this visit.

Post-visit coaching notes. After every visit, a set of notes in Derrick’s method: what you did well, the openings you missed, the language from the prospect or client worth writing down, and the recommended next step. Every visit is a rep. Every rep gets feedback.

Follow-up drafts in Derrick’s voice. Built on Contio’s Next Steps. The follow-up email is drafted before you’ve left the parking lot. You review it, edit if you want, and send it yourself. Contio never sends on your behalf.

Scheduled Spontaneity. After visits with your top-20% clients, a reminder arrives three to four weeks later with a short voicemail script tied to what you actually talked about. The goal is a voicemail, not a call or an email. It keeps your best clients feeling like you’re right next door.

The Advisor Scorecard. A 1 to 10 self-assessment on your three highest dollar-productive activities, which you set at the start and which differ for advisors in maintenance mode versus growth mode. It also tracks fee progression, prospect-to-client conversion, and referral quality, not raw volume.

The Coaching Review Packet. Optional. A summary of a visit, its scorecard, coaching notes, and follow-up draft that you can share with Derrick’s coaching team if you work with them directly. Nothing leaves your workspace unless you choose to share it.

And because it’s one Contio plan, everything else comes with it: unlimited visits, the Daily Brief, in-visit intelligence, Canvases, custom AI recap prompts, and compounding workspace intelligence that makes every visit sharper than the last. It works on Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet, and for in-person visits the Contio mobile app captures from your phone. All AI processing happens in Contio’s private cloud, no audio is stored, and your client data is never used to train AI models. Here’s how we handle privacy and security.

What we started with

We didn’t start with features. We started with the pains Derrick hears most, pulled from his coaching sessions and our own calls with advisors:

  • “I know I’m better than my numbers say.”
  • “I can’t say what I do in a way that lands.”
  • “It’s 6 PM and I haven’t looked at tomorrow.”

“If you want to make it rain, connect with pain.”

— Derrick Kinney

Every part of the toolkit maps back to one of those three. The Brief and the Scorecard answer the first. “You Know How” and the three-sentence framework, built into every prospect template, answer the second. The Brief and the follow-up draft answer the third.

What this isn’t

It isn’t investment advice. It coaches how you run the visit, ask for the referral, and follow up, so your practice grows. What you recommend is still yours. That’s your expertise.

It isn’t Derrick personally reviewing your visits. It’s his method, applied to your real prospects and clients, at a fraction of the cost of direct coaching.

And it isn’t another notetaker. Derrick said it best: the last thing you need is another notetaker. How about a tool that grows your business?

“The last thing you need is another notetaker. How about a tool that grows your business?”

Where to start

Derrick Kinney Elite Advisor Coaching is available today. It’s $56 per user per month billed annually, or $75 billed monthly, and it’s priced per user, so a firm can put the advisors who want the coaching on this plan and leave the rest where they are. The toolkit installs automatically, and there’s a short walkthrough on your first login. If you’re already on Contio, you can switch your plan from Settings and everything you’ve captured stays put.
